AI can write code in seconds...

AI is making code generation faster and cheaper, but production systems still depend on human judgment. The real value of senior engineers is increasingly in architecture, reliability, security, trade-offs, and taking responsibility for the system as a whole.

AI can write code in seconds...

But can it take responsibility for what happens at 2:00 AM when production goes down?

That is where software engineering is changing.

According to the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey:

84% of developers use or plan to use AI tools.

But only 33% trust the accuracy of AI output, while 46% actively distrust it.

That tells me something important.

The value of a software engineer is moving away from:

“How fast can you write code?”

and toward:

“Can you make the right engineering decisions?”

AI can generate:

→ An API controller

→ A SQL query

→ Unit tests

→ Docker files

→ Terraform

→ A React component

→ A microservice skeleton

But someone still has to decide:

→ Should this even be a microservice?

→ Where should the service boundary be?

→ What happens when the database is unavailable?

→ What happens when the same event arrives twice?

→ Should this operation be synchronous or asynchronous?

→ How do we prevent cascading failures?

→ Is this architecture secure?

→ Will this design still work at 10× traffic?

→ What will it cost to operate?

→ And sometimes the most important question:

Should we build this at all?

AI makes generating code cheaper.

But it can also make generating bad architecture faster.

That is why I don't think senior engineers become less important in the AI era.

Their role changes.

Less time typing boilerplate.

More time on:

Architecture.

Trade-offs.

Security.

Reliability.

Business context.

Reviewing AI-generated work.

And taking responsibility for the final system.

The engineer of the future may write less code manually.

But they may need to understand software systems more deeply than ever before.

AI can generate the code.

Engineering judgment still decides whether that code belongs in production.

What do you think?

As AI gets better at coding, what becomes the most valuable skill for a software engineer?
